Method
- In your saucepan, pour in the milk and water. Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer. This usually takes just a few minutes.
- Once the milk mixture is simmering, gradually whisk in the cream of rice cereal. Make sure to whisk constantly as you add it to prevent any lumps from forming.
- Reduce the heat to low and continue to stir frequently. Let the cream of rice simmer for about 3-5 minutes, or until it thickens to your desired consistency. Keep stirring to prevent sticking to the bottom of the pan.
- Remove the saucepan from the heat. Stir in the sugar, salt, and vanilla extract (if using). Mix well until everything is fully incorporated.
- Ladle the hot cream of rice into serving bowls. Now for the fun part – add your favorite toppings! Butter, brown sugar, fresh fruit, nuts, cinnamon, maple syrup – the possibilities are endless. Get creative and make it your own!
Notes
You can easily adjust the consistency of your cream of rice by using more or less milk. For a richer flavor, try using whole milk or adding a pat of butter at the end of cooking.
