Ingredients

  • 2 cups warm water 110-115°F (43-46°C)
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast 1 standard packet
  • 1/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 5 1/2 - 6 cups all-purpose flour plus more for dusting

Equipment

  • 1 Large Mixing Bowl
  • 1 9x5 inch Loaf Pan
  • 1 Wire Cooling Rack

Method

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and a pinch of the sugar. Let sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in the remaining sugar, salt, and vegetable oil. Gradually add 5 cups of flour, mixing until a shaggy dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface. Knead for 8-10 minutes, adding more flour as needed, until the dough is smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough. Shape it into a loaf and place it in a greased 9x5 inch loaf pan. Cover and let it rise for another 30-45 minutes.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 30-35 minutes, until the top is golden brown. The internal temperature should be 190°F (88°C).
  7. Let the bread cool in the pan for 5 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

Notes

Ensure your water isn't too hot, as it can kill the yeast.
For a richer flavor, you can brush the top of the loaf with melted butter right after baking.
Don't slice the bread while it's still warm, as this can lead to a gummy texture. Patience is key!
