Method
- Step 1: Roux Time! In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, until a light golden brown roux forms. This is the base of your flavorful gravy!
- Step 2: Broth and Seasoning. Gradually whisk in chicken broth, ensuring no lumps form. Add onion powder, garlic powder, black pepper, and a pinch of cayenne pepper (for that signature Popeyes kick!).
- Step 3: Simmer and Thicken. Bring the gravy to a simmer, then reduce heat to low and cook for 10-15 minutes, or until the gravy has thickened to your desired consistency. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- Step 4: Taste and Adjust. Taste the gravy and adjust seasonings as needed. Add salt to taste. For a richer flavor, you can stir in a tablespoon of heavy cream or half-and-half at the end.
- Step 5: Serve and Enjoy! Serve your homemade Popeyes gravy hot over mashed potatoes, biscuits, fried chicken, or anything your heart desires!
Notes
Chef's Notes: For an even deeper flavor, use chicken broth made from roasted chicken bones. If you prefer a smoother gravy, strain it through a fine-mesh sieve before serving. To make it vegetarian, substitute vegetable broth for chicken broth, though the flavor profile will be slightly different from the original Popeyes gravy.
