Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup powdered sugar for rolling

Equipment

  • 2 Baking Sheets
  • 2 Mixing Bowls
  • 1 Electric Mixer Optional

Method

  1. In a large bowl, whisk together the cocoa powder, granulated sugar, and vegetable oil until combined.
  2. Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
  4. Cover the bowl and chill the dough for at least 4 hours, or overnight.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  6. Place the powdered sugar in a small bowl. Scoop the chilled dough into 1-inch balls and roll them generously in the powdered sugar to coat completely.
  7. Place the coated dough balls on the prepared baking sheets, about 2 inches apart.
  8. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are set and the centers are soft. The cookies will crackle as they bake.
  9. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Chilling the dough is a crucial step for this recipe; do not skip it, as it prevents the cookies from spreading too much and helps create the signature crinkle effect.
For an extra festive touch, you can add a pinch of cinnamon or a drop of peppermint extract to the dough.
